My name is Bruce Shand. This year I celebrate being in a law office in Salt Lake City, Utah for 40 years. I have concentrated my practice on a broad range of legal services effecting older adults for at least 35 of those 40 years. Elder law, planning for long-term care, estate planning, estate administration, probate, guardianship and conservatorship creation and administration, and business planning are all that I do. Older adults, however, are not our only clients. I provide estate-planning services to people of all ages. I help clients with estate planning strategies that address not only transfers on death, but also health care, taxes, asset protection, remarriage protection, disabled beneficiary protection, and disability.
Many of my clients own businesses. In addition to my law degree, I have a Masters in Business Administration. I have helped my clients with organization, business strategies that provide for the asset protection, operational strategies and strategies for the continuation of their businesses after their retirement or death.
My planning is of the highest quality. I constantly update my education in my chosen field. I am a member of the National Association of Elder Law Attorneys and I am a charter member of the Utah Bar Association Elder Law Section. I use the most refined and advanced planning tools in the industry. Unlike many in my profession, I pride myself on my personal relationship with my clients during the planning process. My relationship with my clients is usually long term. Many of my clients have been with me for between 20 and 30 years.
In the absence of legal planning otherwise, their estate will be distributed after death according to Utah’s laws of intestacy. Of course, this may not be the plan they would have chosen. A properly drafted estate plan will replace the terms of the State’s estate plan with your own
Because probate can be a lengthy, costly and public process, many people choose to avoid it. There are a number of legal strategies that will allow you to pass property to another person after death, without going through probate.
The family element in every family business can mean the difference between its success or failure during the transfer process. The retirement, disability or death of the business owner are all common events that can trigger a business transfer.

For several years I had read about the importance of Estate Planning but believed the entire process to be confusing and time consuming. Bruce changed my thinking in one meeting. His knowledge and many years of experience enabled him to provide me with practical, thoughtful, and thorough estate planning advice. He listened carefully to my comments and questions then responded with a clear, easy to understand explanation of the Estate Planning process. The information Bruce has so patiently provided me with has been invaluable and it’s comforting to know my children will not be burdened with unnecessarily complex probate issues.
Now that my Estate Planning is complete, Bruce continues to keep me educated about various issues through informative emails. As I have two elderly parents living in an assisted care facility, I continue to ask for his guidance. Even though he is extremely busy, he never fails to return my calls promptly. I highly recommend Bruce Shand.
